History

Discmania was founded by Jussi Meresmaa, a passionate disc golfer and entrepreneur from Finland. While there are some conflicting dates in the sources, according to most reliable information, Discmania was officially established as a brand in 2006. However, some sources suggest Meresmaa's disc golf business activities began as early as 2000. Meresmaa's journey in disc golf began in 1994 when he discovered the sport and quickly became hooked after throwing his first disc, an Innova Gazelle. Finding little disc golf activity in his hometown of Tampere, Finland, he began organizing weekly events and tournaments with friends at a course near his home. Before Discmania became a major brand, Meresmaa operated a small disc retail business called Frisbeezer, which included a web shop he set up in 2003. At this time, disc golf in Finland wasn't developed enough to support a full-time career, so Meresmaa obtained a degree in marketing and entrepreneurship and started an advertising agency, skills that would later prove valuable to his disc golf ventures. A pivotal moment came in 2006 when Meresmaa organized the first PDGA Major event in Europe, the European Open, bringing top American players like Ken Climo and Dave Feldberg to Finland. This event helped establish Discmania's presence in the disc golf world and showcased Meresmaa's vision for professionalizing the sport. As the company grew, Meresmaa established Innova Champion Europe Ltd to distribute Innova products in Europe, hiring his first employee outside his family, Juho Rantalaiho. This strategic partnership with sporting goods stores across Finland significantly increased disc golf's visibility to the general public. For many years, Discmania operated primarily as a design and marketing company, with their discs being manufactured by Innova Champion Discs. In 2018, the company made a significant strategic shift by announcing partnerships with additional manufacturers Latitude 64 (Sweden) and Yikun (China) to produce new product lines. The most transformative change came in 2021 when Discmania established its own manufacturing facility in Skellefteå, Sweden, a 22,000-square-foot operation located near Latitude 64's facilities. This decision was driven by supply issues with Innova during the pandemic, which had severely limited Discmania's ability to meet market demand. In recognition of his entrepreneurial success, Meresmaa was named the winner of the 2021 EY Entrepreneur of the Year competition in Finland. This award highlighted Discmania's remarkable growth from a small garage operation to a global brand leader manufacturing disc golf equipment from multiple factories.
