Discraft is a leading manufacturer of flying discs for various disc sports, including disc golf, ultimate frisbee, and freestyle. The company was founded in 1978 in London, Ontario, Canada, and moved to Michigan in 1979 when founders Jim Kenner and Gail McColl established what is now Discraft Inc. Describing itself as the "World Leader in Disc Sports," Discraft proudly manufactures all its products in the United States. The company's headquarters and manufacturing facility are located in Wixom, Michigan, where they've been producing high-quality discs for over four decades. The company's core focus has always been on quality and consistency, which has helped them become a major global industry player. Discraft is particularly known for two flagship products: the Ultra-Star, which is the official disc for USA Ultimate championship tournaments, and their extensive line of disc golf discs that are used by both recreational players and top professionals worldwide.

History

Discraft's story began modestly in a small garage in Westland, Michigan, when Jim Kenner and Gail McColl founded the company in 1979. Both founders were passionate disc sports enthusiasts and players—McColl was particularly accomplished, earning multiple Women's World Titles before her Hall of Fame induction. Jim Kenner took a business he started in his parents' rec room in the 1970s and built it into one of the dominant companies in the outdoor recreation industry. The early focus was on creating superior flying discs that would outperform what was available at the time. Their first product was the Sport Disc, and while establishing their company, they also organized several disc sports tournaments. A significant milestone came in the late 1980s when Discraft developed the Ultra-Star disc for ultimate frisbee. The Ultra-Star quickly gained popularity among players who found it superior to competitors' products, offering better predictability in flight and greater velocity. Through grass-roots marketing and providing sponsorships for hundreds of ultimate events and teams, the Ultra-Star became ubiquitous on ultimate fields. In February 1991, it was selected as the official disc for tournament play by the Ultimate Players Association (now USA Ultimate). While maintaining its strong position in ultimate frisbee, Discraft gradually expanded its presence in the growing disc golf market. For many years, the company operated as a smaller competitor to Innova, the dominant disc golf manufacturer. As Bob Julio, Discraft's Team Manager who joined the company in 2008, noted, it was very much a "Mom and Pop" operation in those days. A transformative period for Discraft began in 2018 when they signed Paul McBeth, the world's top disc golfer who had previously been sponsored by Innova. This four-year deal, reportedly worth over a million dollars, was believed to be the largest player contract in the history of the sport at that time. The partnership proved immensely successful, with McBeth's signature discs selling over 250,000 units in the first year alone. In 2021, Discraft made headlines by signing McBeth to a groundbreaking 10-year, $10 million contract extension. The company took the unusual step of publicly announcing the size of the deal, which was by far the largest in the sport's history. This move signaled Discraft's ambitions in the disc golf market and their confidence in the sport's continued growth. The COVID-19 pandemic period saw unprecedented growth for Discraft, as disc golf surged in popularity as a safe outdoor activity. During this time, the company doubled in size in terms of sales and employees, with production more than doubling since the pandemic started.
