Founded by Larry and Kathy Leonardi, the company is driven by a genuine passion for bringing the most essential disc golf products to enthusiasts while focusing on thoughtful course design that prioritizes safety and sustainability for players of all skill levels.
History
The journey of Essential Discs began with Larry Leonardi's life-changing experience in 2002 when an accident left him with two herniated discs in his back, requiring pain management, rehabilitation, and specialist care that provided little relief. After completing his geological science degree in 2006 from Western Michigan University, Larry reluctantly agreed to join friends for a round of disc golf at Oshtemo Park, wheelchair in tow. What started as a simple outing became a transformative experience as regular disc golf sessions over the next three months gradually improved his condition, eventually eliminating his need for painkillers and restoring his mobility. Inspired by disc golf's profound impact on his recovery, Larry and his wife Kathy launched into the sport professionally in 2010, initially running events together before expanding into clinics and coaching in North Carolina. Their business evolved significantly when they relocated to Michigan, becoming an LLC and extending their event operations across three states. As Essential Discs continued to grow, they developed their own disc designs, including the wind-resistant "Honey" approach disc, partnered with local clubs to host prestigious tournaments, and eventually shifted their primary focus toward course design. Their commitment to the sport culminated in publishing a book on course design principles to help new designers and parks managers create safer, more sustainable playing experiences.
