About Lightning Discs

Lightning Golf Discs stands as one of the pioneering forces in disc golf manufacturing, dedicated to creating high-quality discs that combine innovative design with exceptional performance for players of all skill levels. Founded by Steve Howle, a passionate disc sports enthusiast who discovered Frisbee during his college days at the University of Texas in Austin, the company has maintained its commitment to quality and innovation since 1984, offering a diverse range of discs with unique flight characteristics that help players elevate their game whether competing in tournaments or enjoying casual rounds with friends.

History

The company's rich history began in the early 1980s when Howle collaborated with his father, an aerospace engineer, to create their first golf disc—the Lightning P-38, named after the iconic World War II American fighter plane. This aviation theme became a signature of Lightning's early identity, with discs named after military aircraft like the F-14 Tomcat and featuring vintage airplane hot-stamp designs that reflected Howle's eclectic interests. The brand gained significant recognition in 1987 when Michael Canci broke the distance record using a Lightning P-38, cementing the company's reputation for producing discs with superior speed and performance, though they later transitioned to a more descriptive naming system for their products while maintaining their independent spirit in the industry—selling glow discs without upcharges and offering custom stamps without setup fees, approaches that set them apart from larger competitors.
